Mouse Ears

I finally got around to making my daughter's mouse ears for our vacation. I decided to go with red bows just because it is the classic Minnie Mouse...and you can never go wrong with a classic:)

Here is my version to making mouse ears:

Materials:

black fur (mine was a remnant)

old headband

hot glue gun

cardboard

one or two bows

lint roller

NOTE: The lint roller is to clean up your fur after you cut and glue each piece cause it sheds...ALOT!

1. Start by measuring the outside of your headband and cut two strips out of your fur in that length and 1/2" wider on each side.

2. Glue your fur to the inside of the headband-fur side out.

3. Trim the fur 1/8" all the way around.

4. Glue your other fur strip to the top of the headband and also trim to the same width as the underside strip so they are even all the way around.

5. Glue your strip edges together. This works best by applying glue to the edge of the headband that way no glue oozes out onto the fur.

This is what it looks like when it is glued all the way around. Notice how you can barely see the seam. The fur hides it pretty well.

6. Cut out 4 circles of the same size for your "ears". I used a coffee mug. I haven't attached them yet...I just layed two of them close to the headband so you can see my proportions.

7. Cut out two circles of cardboard that are about 1/4" smaller than your fur ear pieces.

8. With a dab of glue in the center...glue your circle to the wrong side of the fur.

9. Cut off a piece of the circle at the bottom as shown. Note it's not too big of a cut...about 1 and 1/2" long.

10. Glue your other ear piece to the cardboard piece with wrong sides facing (you want both sides of the ear to be furry). Leave an opening for the bottom of the circle that you cut earlier.

11. Decide where you want the ear to be placed on the headband, apply glue to the inner part of the opening you left, and press onto the headband. Hold it in place with your fingers for about a minute to make sure the glue really held well.

12. Repeat for the other ear. To make sure you get the ears the same distance apart...measure the placement of your first ear from the bottom of the headband to the bottom of the ear and make a mark on the other side of the headband for the other ear.

The glue held a lot better than I thought it would. It is just as sturdy as the ears my daughter tried on at the Disney Store.

Now you can put whatever kinds of bows you want on your ears. I found this pack of premade bows at Joann on clearance.

I decided I liked a bow on each ear as opposed to a big bow in the center. I think it fits my daughter's spunky personality better:)

And that's it! Now of course my daughter doesn't want to take them off. I need to just make sure they can last a week until we leave:)

Price:

felt: $.60

headband-already had

bows: $.97

cardboard-cut up shoe box

Total: $1.57

  12. I did these for Halloween this year. I had an old headband from her costume last year (a bee). I had a friend make the bows, but she put them on clips. Instead of gluing them to the headband, I cut slits in the fabric on top and clipped the clips to it. I'm glad I did because I didn't check to make sure the headband fit before finishing it. It was too small, but I was able to put her hair in high half pigtails (didn't pull them all the way through) and clipped the bows in front. Still looked super cute!
