DIY: Paper Heart Wall Art

This wall art idea came to me a few days ago and I was so excited to make it for my little girl. She LOVES hearts, and I picked out a bunch of her favorite colors (because, if you are the parent of a toddler, you know how their favorite color changes every day).

Best part of all, this cost $2 to make. We already had some of this wood in the garage, leftover from making slats for our bed, and I also had the lace to cover the front. I bought some scrapbook paper while on sale at Michael's.

STEP 1: I made a heart template out of posterboard and then traced and cut out all my hearts (88 total).

STEP 2: I divided the hearts into 8 secitons of 11 and staggered the colors so they would look random.

STEP 3: I sewed each strand together, leaving a 1" gap between each heart and long threads at the top of each row to wrap around the wood.

STEP 4: I wrapped each line around the wood and secured the string on the top and back with tape.

STEP 5: I cut some lace and hot glued it over the front of the wood, making sure to seal each string.

I'm really happy with how it turned out and my daughter loves it...so that makes me even happier.

It's colorful and sweet, just like her.

Curtains From a Duvet Part 2 (this time with a lining)

One of my most popular posts to date is the no sew curtains from a duvet that I made for our living room and dining room. It amazes me how many visits it gets each week.

I found another Ikea duvet at the thrift store and knew it would be perfect for the two windows in our bedroom. This time I wanted to line them with another fabric on the back to keep out more light. Baby  boy still shares our room with us (before he can share a room with his big sis) and so, the less light in there during the day...the more likely he is to stay asleep during naptime:)

LINED CURTAINS FROM A DUVET

1 queen size DUVET

2 queen size FLAT SHEETS

MATCHING THREAD

STEP 1: Cut two layers of duvet apart. Then cut each large panel into two curtain panels (You will now have 4 panels). Cut the panels to the length that you need for your windows plus 2" for seams. Cut your flat sheets to the same size as your printed panels.

STEP 2: With right sides facing, sew one duvet panel to one sheet panel (with a 1/2" seam), leaving a gap at the bottom to flip right side out.

STEP 3: Flip right side out, fold in the gap, and top stitch all the way around the panel 1/4" from the edge. Clip to some curtain clips and you're done!

Pillows with Personality

I originally found this "his and hers" pillow idea at Freshly Picked and I knew I had to make my own versions. This idea has been saved in my "to do" folder so I am so excited to finally have them done!

I know I don't post photos of myself or my family on here (sorry...too many crazies out there for my liking)...but these are pretty darn close to how we actually look. They bring personality into our room with some humor too...which is good because we don't like to take ourselves too seriously:)

For the pillow, I used a tan home decor weight fabric. I cut out four squares for my pillow pieces. Then I took some brown material (it has a really nice grainy texture up close) and made appliques for our hair and my husband's glasses. To learn how to make an applique...check out my previous post HERE.

I ironed on my appliques and then stitched around them with black thread. Finally, I placed right sides of my pillow panels together and sewed around (leaving an opening to turn right side out). I turned them right side out, stuffed them, and sewed the opening closed.

I love how they are personal but make us laugh:) I'm thinking of a yellow striped pillow behind them maybe? We'll see.

DIY Wall Flowers for 25 Cents!

My daughter's room is coming along...slowly but surely. I put the finishing touches on her kitchen that my dad (and husband and I) made...so there are pictures to come!

I saw these Umbra Wall Flowers about a year ago on another craft blog and have loved them ever since. I knew I always wanted them for our daughter's room...but I wanted the white ones and her walls at our old place were white so it didn't seem like a good combination at the time.

Now that we have moved and we have lovely tan walls through out, I got online to order some of these flowers...but when I saw that 25 of them were $20...I decided to rethink the situation.

Then, I saw this DIY version on Billie Monster and I knew I had my solution! She is sweet enough to share her printable template as well. Don't you love crafty givers??

So, one half sheet of white posterboard later...I had 20 of my own wall flowers:

I love them so much! I could seriously make about a hundred more and put them everywhere. Everywhere.

I went with just plain white since my daughter's room is a little more modern and streamlined, but the possibilities are endless with this project. I also liked the texture of the posterboard since I was doing all one color. I made the the flowers so that the matte side of the posterboard was showing.

On the larger flowers, I used a small glue stick to curl the edges and I used a pen on the smaller flowers.

Also, since I didn't want to add another 20 holes to the walls that we rent...I just stuck them on with scotch tape that I rolled into loops. They have been on for a week and haven't budged. Plus, it's been nice to move them around wherever I want.

I think my favorite part of this project is the price. You can't beat $.25! I mean...you probably have that down the seat of your couch...along with some raisins and puzzle pieces if you live in our house:)
