This wall art idea came to me a few days ago and I was so excited to make it for my little girl. She LOVES hearts, and I picked out a bunch of her favorite colors (because, if you are the parent of a toddler, you know how their favorite color changes every day).
Best part of all, this cost $2 to make. We already had some of this wood in the garage, leftover from making slats for our bed, and I also had the lace to cover the front. I bought some scrapbook paper while on sale at Michael's.
STEP 1: I made a heart template out of posterboard and then traced and cut out all my hearts (88 total).
STEP 2: I divided the hearts into 8 secitons of 11 and staggered the colors so they would look random.
STEP 3: I sewed each strand together, leaving a 1" gap between each heart and long threads at the top of each row to wrap around the wood.
STEP 4: I wrapped each line around the wood and secured the string on the top and back with tape.
STEP 5: I cut some lace and hot glued it over the front of the wood, making sure to seal each string.
I'm really happy with how it turned out and my daughter loves it...so that makes me even happier.

ReplyDeleteI attached this to the wall by setting it on two nails at the bottom, then attaching another nail to the top to hold it in place. Hope that helps!:)

ReplyDeleteI did this with felt hearts...all different colors. Thought maybe it might last longer??? I'm draping it around the hospital "crib" for pictures when my girlie is born, then I'll bring it home to hang in her room;) Just another thought!

DeleteHi!! This is absolutely adorable! I'm thinking about doing this for myself ( I'm 15) and I was wondering can you explain it to me a little better how you attached the hearts to the string? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWhen I started sewing the hearts together, I pulled long threads from the needle and bobbin on my machine, then sewed all the hearts together. When I attached it to the wood, I positioned the top of the hearts where I wanted it and then wrapped the remainder of my lead string around the wood mulitple times. I then secured the string in place by a piece of tape on top of the wood (since it wouldn't be seen once it was hung) and the back of the wood and cut off any extra thread. Securing the lace on top of the front panel helped keep it all in place too. I hope that helps!

Hi Melissa, this is Cynthia, I'm new around. I loved your Heart Wall Art, and I want to do it for my bedroom, maybe not with hearts but with another nice shape. I have a couple of questions, can you help me please? first, I don´t have a sewing machine, hand sewing will work?

DeleteHand sewing will also work...it will just be time consuming. To save some time, you could just sew the ends of each heart together (and not stitch through the whole heart).
Also, scrapbook paper is much thinner than cardboard, but thicker than printer paper. Do you have cardstock? It's thin, but able to hold it's shape and not bend too easily.

I cut out squares that were 3" x 4" and the heart took up almost the whole piece. Hope that helps!

ReplyDeleteThis is amazing! Your daughter will remember it forever. When i was 7 my mom painted balloons on my wall and used ribbons for the strings and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I used to hold one of the strings every night when I went to bed.

However, I don't have a sewing machine so I'm wondering if the paper is thin enough to easily pierce through by hand with a needle and thread?
ReplyDeleteYes, I did sew it on the sewing machine;) I used regular scrapbooking paper from the craft store and it would be simple to sew by hand. You would only need to sew a few stitches in each piece down the middle. Good luck!

Your project made my FB feed on the Craftfoxes site! I love this and I was thinking that I have a scrap booking set of pre-cut shapes like hearts, circles, squares, etc. They would be smaller but I wouldn't have to cut out anything and they'd already be in a variety of colors!
